Rear Layshaft Stake Nut for 5-speed manual gearbox R380 Land Rover.
It is located at the rear of the gearbox and is tightened directly onto the tail of the layshaft.
What is it responsible for?
- Fixing the gear cluster: The main function of the nut is to rigidly hold the gear cluster of the layshaft in place.
- Preventing axial displacement: It is tightened with a specific force (torque) and prevents the shaft and its bearings from moving longitudinally (axial play) during transmission operation.
Critical!
This nut is a single-use part.
After tightening, its edge must be staked into a special groove on the shaft. This physically deforms the metal of the nut so that it does not come loose from severe vibrations.
It should not be reused!
If you disassembled the gearbox and removed the old nut, when reassembling, be sure to use only the new EJP7738L.
Even if the thread looks intact visually, the deformed edge after re-staking will not hold the load, the nut will loosen, leading to instant shaft play and complete gear tooth destruction
