Installed inside the secondary (main) shaft synchronizer clutch.

What is it responsible for?

- Fixing synchronizer sliders: The main function of this ring is to hold in place three small metal sliders (shims or plates) located inside the synchronizer hub under the sliding sleeve
- Creating preloading force during gear shifting: When you move the gear lever, the sleeve pushes on the sliders, and this spring resists them. This creates the correct force for the synchronizer baulk ring to press against the gear cone and align their speeds until the teeth fully engage.
- Preventing grinding: Without this spring (or if it has cracked/weakened), the synchronizer will not be able to properly align the speeds of the shaft and gear, causing gears to engage with a characteristic metallic grinding noise, or it may not engage at all

Important detail for repair:

Original Land Rover factory springs had a wire thickness of 1.80 mm. However, a well-known British manufacturer of tuned transmissions for Land Rover - Ashcroft Transmissions - produces a reinforced version of this ring with a wire thickness of 2.00 mm. They provide slightly higher pressure on the synchronizer, significantly reducing the likelihood of grinding during fast gear shifting. If you are completely overhauling the gearbox, experts often recommend using this reinforced version.
